Silver Linden Tree Seeds

(Tilia tomentosa)

The Silver Linden Tree, known botanically as Tilia tomentosa, is a deciduous tree native to southeastern Europe and western Asia. It is admired for its elegant, pyramidal shape and distinctive foliage. The tree gets its name from the striking contrast between the green upper surface and the silvery-white underside of its heart-shaped leaves. When the wind stirs the branches, the shimmering effect created by the leaf undersides gives the tree a luminous, silver appearance that sets it apart from other linden species.

This tree typically reaches a height of 50 to 70 feet, though in ideal conditions it can grow taller. It produces fragrant, pale yellow flowers in early to mid-summer, which are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Silver Linden is well-suited to urban environments due to its tolerance of pollution, heat, and drought once established. It grows best in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, although it can adapt to a variety of conditions. The dense canopy provides deep shade, making it a popular choice for parks and streetscapes.

In addition to its ornamental value, the Silver Linden has cultural significance in various regions, symbolizing peace, protection, and longevity. Its wood is soft and light, sometimes used in carving and specialty woodworking, though it is not as commercially significant as other hardwoods. Overall, the Silver Linden is prized for both its visual appeal and its adaptability, making it a favorite in landscape design and urban forestry.

Zones: 4 to 7

Germination Range: 60-80%

Stratification Requirement: Mechanical removal or scarification of the seed pericarp followed by 90 days cold moist stratification. Pericarp is the round outer husk which surrounds the seed inside

Planting Instructions:

Begin by soaking the seeds in warm water for 24–48 hours. Then place them in a moist, well-aerated medium like sand or a seed-starting soil mix. Store them in a zip-lock bag at 32–41°F (0–5°C) for about 90 days. A refrigerator works well for this. Check occasionally to make sure the medium stays slightly moist, but not soggy.

Once the cold period is done, plant the seeds about half an inch deep in pots or trays filled with well-draining soil. Keep them in a bright, warm location, and water regularly to maintain even moisture. Growing lights and a heat seedling mat is recommended for the best germination results. Germination may take several weeks to a few months, and not all seeds will sprout in the first year—some may need a second cycle of stratification.

Once the seedlings emerge and grow a few sets of leaves, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly outdoors in a sheltered spot with full sun and moist, fertile soil. Protect young trees from harsh winds and drought while they establish.
