Sacred Fig Tree
(Ficus religiosa)
Ficus religiosa, commonly known as the sacred fig, peepal tree, or bodhi tree, is a large, long-lived species of fig native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. It is renowned for its religious and cultural significance in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. In Buddhist tradition, it is believed that Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, attained enlightenment while meditating beneath a Ficus religiosa, which is why the tree is often planted near temples and monasteries. The tree is considered sacred, and its leaves and branches are sometimes used in spiritual rituals and offerings.
This tree can grow to impressive sizes, often reaching heights of 20 to 30 meters (65 to 100 feet) with a wide, spreading crown. Its distinctive heart-shaped leaves with long, tapering tips move gracefully in the wind, creating a constant shimmering effect. The bark is light gray, and the trunk can develop impressive girth over the centuries, sometimes with prominent buttress roots. It is a semi-evergreen species in tropical climates, but in cooler or drier conditions, it may shed some of its leaves during certain seasons.
Ficus religiosa produces small figs that start green and turn purple when ripe, providing food for a variety of birds and animals. Like other figs, it has a unique relationship with fig wasps, which are its primary pollinators. The tree thrives in well-drained soils and full sunlight, showing remarkable resilience to drought once established. It is capable of growing from seeds, cuttings, or by sprouting from cracks in walls and other surfaces, making it a persistent and adaptable plant.
Aside from its spiritual role, the sacred fig has cultural and medicinal importance. In traditional medicine, parts of the tree have been used to treat ailments such as asthma, skin conditions, and digestive issues. Its deep shade makes it a popular choice for public spaces, and its long lifespan means many trees become living landmarks. In many regions, it is not only valued for its beauty and shade but also revered as a living symbol of wisdom, endurance, and enlightenment.
Zones: 10 to 11
Germination Range: 50-70%
Stratification Requirement: Sow Under Glass
Planting Instructions:
To plant Sacred Fig tree seeds, begin by soaking them in lukewarm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and encourage germination. Prepare a fine, well-draining soil mix made of equal parts sand, compost, and garden loam, and sterilize it if possible to prevent fungal issues. Fill a seed tray or small pots with this mix, then scatter the seeds on the surface, pressing them gently into the soil but not covering them deeply, as they need light to germinate. Mist the surface lightly with water to keep it evenly moist without becoming waterlogged.
Place the container in a warm location with indirect light, ideally between 75–85°F (24–29°C), and maintain consistent humidity by covering it with a clear plastic dome or plastic wrap with small ventilation holes. Germination can take anywhere from two to six weeks, and sometimes longer. Once seedlings have produced at least two true leaves, transplant them carefully into individual pots, still using well-draining soil. Gradually expose them to brighter light and gentle airflow to strengthen their stems.
When the young trees are strong enough and the outdoor temperatures are consistently warm, they can be planted in the ground in a sunny, sheltered location with deep, fertile soil. Regular watering during the first year is essential, but avoid waterlogging, as Ficus religiosa prefers moist but well-aerated conditions.
